Who's behind this
About Tag & Timber
A deer-gear site that does the boring homework — compiles the specs, does the math, and tells you plainly what it hasn't tested.
Why this site exists
Deer hunting gear is sold on speed, grams and marketing, and most “best of” roundups either repeat the box copy or claim a field test they can’t prove. Tag & Timber takes the opposite approach: we read the spec sheet against the claim, do the arithmetic other roundups skip — the true season cost of a cellular camera, insulation grams versus temperature, kinetic energy versus draw weight — and show our work. When a cheaper option is the better buy, that’s our pick, even when the pricier one would pay us more.
Who writes it
Tag & Timber is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who’s genuinely into this — the kind of person who reads owner’s manuals for fun and runs the numbers before buying. Stephen V.is not a professional guide, a pro-staffer, or anyone claiming decades “in the field.” What he brings is the habit of checking a spec against the source, doing the math himself, and being honest about the limits of that — which is exactly the trust gap in this category.
Stephen is an enthusiast who's genuinely into this — he reads the owner's manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the math other roundups skip. No lab coat, no test lab, no pro-staff badge. What he brings is the habit of checking a spec sheet against the claim, running the cost-to-run and kinetic-energy numbers himself, and saying plainly when a cheaper option is the better buy.
What we do — and don’t — claim
We do not run a test lab, and we don’t pretend to. We haven’t hand-tested every crossbow, boot or camera we compare, and we say so on the page. Instead we compile published manufacturer specs, standards and real running costs, cite our sources, and reason from there. It’s a method you could reproduce yourself — which is the point. Our full methodology explains exactly how picks are made.
How we stay honest
- Prices are live and dated. Every price comes from a daily retailer check and carries the date it was pulled. If the check stops, the number disappears rather than going stale.
- No fabricated proof. There are no invented reviews, star ratings or staged field-test photos anywhere on this site.
- Buyer-first picks. Commission never decides a recommendation. Read our funding disclosure and editorial policyfor how that’s kept honest.
- Corrections in the open. Find a spec we got wrong? Tell us— we check it against the source and fix it, and say that we did.
Tag & Timber is published by Type 5 Marketing LLC. It is an online publisher, not a store — we don’t sell gear or ship anything. We point you to the best place to buy and earn a small commission if you do, at no cost to you.
