How We Make Money

The short version

Tag & Timber is free to read. We fund it with affiliate links: when you click a buy button and purchase, the retailer may pay us a small commission. It costs you nothing extra — the price is the same whether you use our link or not. That’s the entire business model, and we’d rather tell you up front than bury it.

Amazon Associates

Tag & Timber is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Most of the buy links on this site point to Amazon, which carries the trail cameras, crossbows, tree stands and boots we compare.

Other programs

We may add links to other retailers and affiliate networks over time — for example, brand-direct programs for crossbow or camo makers — but only for programs we’ve actually joined. When we can send you to a better price or a better place to buy, we will, and we’ll route it through the same honest process. If a link doesn’t earn us anything, that doesn’t change whether we recommend the product.

What the commission does and doesn’t do

• It doesn’t decide our picks.The reasoning behind a recommendation is the same whether a link earns us a lot, a little, or nothing. When a cheaper option is the better buy, it’s our pick — even when a pricier one would pay us more.
• It doesn’t raise your price.Affiliate commissions come out of the retailer’s margin, not your pocket.
• It doesn’t buy a placement.Nobody can pay to appear on this site or to rank higher in a roundup. We don’t accept paid placements or sponsored picks.

How prices work

Every price you see is pulled from a live retailer feed and stamped with the date it was pulled. We never store or hand-type a price, so a stale number can’t appear. If a live price isn’t available, the button says “Check price” instead of showing a figure we can’t stand behind. More on that in our methodology.

Per-page disclosure

You’ll also see a short disclosure near the top of every page that carries buy links, and an #adlabel on the buy buttons themselves. That’s deliberate — the FTC requires affiliate relationships to be clear and conspicuous, and we agree they should be.
