How to choose a deer broadhead
Every head here will kill a whitetail with a well-placed shot. The right one for youdepends on four things — and grain weight isn’t really one of them for deer, since 100 grains is the standard and works fine.
Match the head to your bow’s energy
This is the decision under all the others. A mechanicalbroadhead spends some of your arrow’s kinetic energy deploying its blades on impact, so it wants a bow with power to spare — a modern compound at a healthy draw weight. On a low-poundage bow, a youth setup, or a traditional bow, that energy tax can rob you of the penetration you need, and a fixedhead — which uses none of your energy to “open” — is the safer, deeper-driving choice. Kinetic energy is a product of arrow weight and speed, and it bleeds off downrange, so the lighter your setup, the more a fixed head’s efficiency matters.
Flight and tuning
A broadhead that doesn’t hit where your field points hit is a tuning problem you must fix before you hunt. Fixed blades have exposed surface area that acts like a rudder, so they magnify any bow-tuning flaw and demand a properly tuned rig to fly true. Mechanicals keep their blades folded in flight, so they fly almost exactly like a field point and forgive a slightly imperfect tune — that field-point flight is their whole appeal. Whichever you choose, sight in with the actual broadheads, not just field points.
Cut diameter and blood trails
A bigger cut opens a wider wound channel and, on a good hit, an easier blood trail to follow — a genuine benefit for a newer hunter tracking their first deer. That’s the case for a 2-inch mechanical like the Rage. But a bigger mechanical cut also costs more energy to deploy, so it’s a shot-placement head that rewards a broadside, double-lung hit and punishes a marginal angle. A fixed head’s smaller cut penetrates more reliably through bone and holds up on a quartering shot. There’s no free lunch — pick the trade that matches your bow and the shots you take.
Reliability and maintenance
A one-piece fixed head like the G5 Montec has nothing to fail: no o-rings, no blades to loosen, and you re-sharpen it and shoot it for years. Mechanicals have moving parts, and the single most common cause of a mechanical opening early in flight is a tired retention band or o-ring — so replace those every season. If you value absolute mechanical simplicity, especially for a hard-angle or heavy-bone shot, a fixed head is the head that never surprises you.
