How to choose a deer rangefinder
Buy for the shots you actually take, not the ones on the box. For deer, every unit here ranges far more distance than you’ll ever need, so the real questions are: Does it give you the angle-compensated distance? Can you read it fast in low light? And does the glass and body fit how and where you hunt? Get those three right and the price on the box is almost a footnote.
Angle compensation is the one feature that matters
When you shoot from an elevated stand, gravity only acts over the horizontalpart of the shot, so an arrow or bullet drops as if the target were closer than the straight-line distance to it. Aim for the line-of-sight number on a steep downhill shot and you shoot high — often high enough to wound or miss. An angle-compensating rangefinder does that trigonometry for you and displays the true horizontal distance to hold for. Max range is mostly marketing
Those headline reflective ranges — 1,400, 1,800, 3,000 yards — are measured off a large, bright, reflective target under ideal conditions. The usable range on a deer-sized animal in cover is a good bit shorter, and it doesn’t matter anyway, because deer are shot at short range. A bow shot lives inside 40 yards for most hunters, and even a gun hunter rarely stretches past a couple hundred. Deer move in the first and last twenty minutes of legal light, so a display you can see against a dark treeline — and glass bright enough to find the animal through the reticle — earns its keep. A red LED display reads beautifully against snow but can wash out against a dark deer at dusk; a black LCD does the opposite.
