Binocular Magnification: 8x vs 10x for Deer
What the two numbers on a binocular really mean, why 8x42 and 10x42 are the deer answers, and why chasing a bigger magnification number usually backfires.
Every binocular is stamped with two numbers — 8x42, 10x42, 12x50 — and for deer hunting almost all of the good answers live in a narrow band. This guide explains what those numbers actually mean, walks through the real trade-off between magnification and everything else, and makes the honest case that 8x42 and 10x42 are the deer defaults for a reason. It also explains why reaching for a bigger magnification number usually makes your glass worse for hunting, not better.
What the two numbers mean
Take a 10x42. The first number, 10x, is magnification— the image looks ten times closer than it does to your naked eye. The second number, 42, is the objective lens diameter in millimeters— the size of the front lenses that gather light. Magnification controls how close things appear; the objective controls how much light the binocular collects, which is what makes the picture bright or dim. For deer hunting, both numbers matter, but not in the way most beginners assume: the objective and the quality of the glass usually do more for you than an extra step of magnification.
The field-of-view trade-off
More magnification is not a free upgrade. As magnification goes up, field of view goes down— you see a narrower slice of the landscape through the glass. An 8x binocular shows you a wider view than a 10x of the same class, and that width matters more than it sounds like it should when you’re hunting deer:
- Finding deer is easier with a wider view. A broader field lets you sweep a field edge or a timbered draw and catch movement without constantly re-aiming the binocular.
- Following a moving deer is easier. When a buck is walking a trail through cover, a wider field keeps it in view instead of forcing you to pan and lose it.
- Close-cover work favors width. In thick timber, where shots and sightings are near, you rarely need extra reach and you always benefit from seeing more at once.
That’s the core of the 8x-versus-10x decision: you’re trading a little reach for a little width, or the other way around.
Exit pupil, brightness, and low light
Here’s the part that decides more hunts than magnification does. Deer move most at the very edges of the day, so low-light brightness is the spec that earns its keep. The number that predicts it is the exit pupil: the objective diameter divided by the magnification.
- 8x42 → 42 ÷ 8 = a 5.25 mm exit pupil.
- 10x42 → 42 ÷ 10 = about a 4.2 mm exit pupil.
The exit pupil is the width of the beam of light the binocular delivers to your eye. A larger exit pupil looks brighter in dim light and is more forgiving of small movements, so the image is easier to hold on the deer. This is why the 8x42 has a slight low-light and steadiness edge over the 10x42, and why bothpair so well with a 42 mm objective: 42 mm is big enough to feed a healthy exit pupil at these magnifications without turning the binocular into a heavy brick around your neck. It’s also why simply cranking magnification hurts — at a fixed objective, more magnification shrinks the exit pupil and dims the view exactly when you need it most.
Why 8x42 is a great deer answer
Choose 8x42if you hunt timber, still-hunt or move a lot, or simply want the most forgiving glass. It gives you the widest field of view of the deer defaults, the brightest low-light picture, and the steadiest image — a real advantage from an unsupported position or if your hands shake even a little in the cold. For close-and-mixed cover, an 8x42 does everything a deer hunter needs and asks less of your hands to do it.
Why 10x42 is a great deer answer
Choose 10x42if you glass more open country — big fields, food plots, cut crops, river bottoms, or Western-style hunts — where the extra reach helps you pick a deer apart at distance and judge antlers before you commit. You give up a touch of field of view and a touch of low-light forgiveness compared to the 8x, but you gain useful magnification for evaluating deer across a field. The 10x42 is the do-everything deer configuration and the value benchmark most hunters measure other binoculars against.
Why not 12x or higher?
It’s tempting to think more magnification is always better. For deer hunting, it usually isn’t, and the reasons compound:
- Hand shake.Magnification amplifies every tremor along with the image. Past 10x, most people can’t hold a steady view without a tripod or a solid rest, and a jittery image is harder to glass with, not easier.
- Dimmer picture.At a common 12x50, the exit pupil is only about 4.2 mm, and on a 12x42 it’s a dim 3.5 mm — noticeably darker at dawn and dusk, the exact hours deer are moving.
- Narrower field of view. You see less at once, which makes finding and following deer harder.
For the way whitetails are actually hunted — close cover, low light, often on the move — a 12x is usually a step backward. High-magnification glass has its place for open-country spotting off a tripod, but it’s the wrong default for a deer hunter’s everyday binocular.
Glass quality beats the numbers
Once you’re inside the 8x42-to-10x42 band, the quality of the glass and coatings matters more than the magnification number.Better glass and better anti-reflective coatings give you a sharper, brighter, truer-color image with more contrast — and that’s what lets you pick a bedded deer out of dead-grass cover or confirm a rack in the last legal minutes of light. A good 8x42 will out-hunt a cheap 10x42 in nearly every way that counts. So spend on the glass first and agonize over 8x versus 10x second; the step in magnification is a preference, but poor glass is a handicap you feel every time the light gets low.
Glassing is scouting — which is why the right glass matters
It’s worth remembering whyyou’re buying binoculars at all. A deer’s survival runs on its senses — sight, hearing, and its nose above all — so the more you can learn about a deer from a distance, the less you have to close the gap and risk being winded or seen. Good glass lets you find, count, and evaluate deer without pressuring them, which is really a form of scouting you do in real time. It pairs naturally with your trail-camera intel: cameras tell you a deer is using an area and roughly when, and your binoculars let you confirm and evaluate it in person. The right magnification, backed by good glass, is what makes all of that reliable in the low light where deer actually move.

For deer, choose 8x42 for timber, movement, and the steadiest, brightest low-light view, or 10x42for a little more reach in open country. Skip 12x and up for an everyday hunting binocular — the shake, dimness, and narrow field cost you more than the reach gives back. And whichever magnification you land on, put your money into the glass; it does more for your hunting than any single step of magnification ever will.
