Red, green and white — what each one is for
Red: the walk in
Red light is the standard choice for approaching a stand, and there is real biology behind it rather than just tradition. The National Deer Association’s summary of the research is that deer lack the long-wavelength cone entirely — the one that lets humans separate red and orange from green. Their colour vision is built around short (blue) and middle (green) wavelengths. Red light sits at the far end of what their eyes are equipped to register.
Red also preserves your own night vision better than white does, so you can switch it off at the base of the tree and still see well enough to climb. That is the second, quieter reason experienced hunters use it.
Green: the blood trail
Green is the trailing colour, and this one is about your eyes rather than the deer’s. Human eyes are most sensitive in the green part of the spectrum, so a green beam gives you more perceived brightness for the same output, and blood tends to stand out with better contrast against leaf litter under green than under red.
Note the tension: green is closer to the middle wavelengths deer actually see well. It is a recovery tool, used after the shot — not a colour to walk in on.
White: the work
Once the deer is down, stop worrying about spooking anything and use white. Field dressing is a job that needs to be done accurately with a very sharp knife in the dark, and doing it by dim red light is how people cut themselves. Same for the drag out.
Why lumens is the wrong headline
A 2,000-lumen headlamp sounds better than a 400-lumen one, and for hunting it usually is not. Four things matter more:
- Which mode it starts in. A lamp that fires up on full white when you hit the button in the dark has just ruined your night vision and lit you up like a beacon. A lamp that can be set to come on in red is worth a great deal.
- How low it dims. The most-used setting on a hunting headlamp is the dimmest one that lets you see your feet. Many bright lamps have no genuinely low setting.
- Runtime on that low setting. Manufacturers quote runtime on modes nobody uses. What matters is how long it lasts on low, which is typically many times the high-mode figure.
- Weatherproofing. An IP rating like IP67 (dust-tight and rated for temporary immersion) means the lamp survives November. A lamp with no stated rating may not survive one heavy rain.
High output does have one genuine use, and it is the reason a bright lamp made this list: a thin blood trail in wet leaves at midnight. That is the night you want 1,000+ lumens and a focused beam.
Rechargeable or batteries?
Rechargeable is more convenient and cheaper to run, and it is what most good lamps now use. The catch is that a dead rechargeable lamp is a dead lamp until you find power — you cannot fix it from your pocket.
The sensible answer is one of each. Rechargeable as your primary, a cheap AAA lamp as the backup, and you have covered the one failure mode that actually strands people. Cold also matters: batteries of every chemistry lose capacity in the cold, so a lamp that shows full charge in a warm truck may not deliver its rated runtime at 15°F.
Headlamp or handheld?
Headlamp for everything except blood trailing. For trailing, a handheld light held low and swept across the ground casts shadows and picks up specks a headlamp beamed straight down from your forehead washes out. Many hunters carry a small handheld alongside the headlamp for exactly this.
Use it less than you think
The best headlamp habit costs nothing: turn it off. Once your eyes adjust, most stand approaches on a moonlit night can be walked with the lamp off entirely, and that is quieter and less disturbing than any colour of light.
