How to Sight In a Crossbow

A calm, step-by-step way to zero a crossbow at 20 yards and confirm every reticle mark out to your maximum ethical range.

Sighting in a crossbow is not complicated, but it rewards patience and repetition. The goal is a top reticle that is dead-on at 20 yards and a set of lower marks you have personally confirmed at 30, 40, and 50 — shot with the exact arrows and broadheads you will carry into the woods, and verified from the position you actually hunt from. Do it in order, shoot in groups of three, and change one thing at a time. Here is the whole process.

Before anything else: a crossbow is a powerful weapon. Keep your fingers below the rail and out of the string’s path, never dry-fire it, follow the manufacturer’s cocking and de-cocking instructions, and treat it as loaded whenever it is cocked.

Step 1: Set up a safe range and your gear

Pick a spot with a dependable backstop and a clear downrange area, and make sure no one can wander into the line of fire. Use a solid rest — a shooting bench, sandbags, or a stable bipod — so you are testing the crossbow, not your offhand steadiness. Then commit to consistency: shoot the same arrows and the same points every time. Mixed arrow weights or a worn point will scatter your groups and make it impossible to tell a real adjustment from noise. Consistent ammunition is the foundation everything else rests on.

Step 2: Start at 20 yards

Begin at 20 yards. It is close enough that you will get on paper fast, and it establishes the primary zero for your top reticle. Fire a group of three with field points, taking your time and using the same hold and trigger press each shot. Three arrows reveal the true center of your group; adjusting to a single shot risks chasing a flyer. Look at where the cluster lands relative to your aim point.

Step 3: Adjust windage and elevation

Now move the top reticle to the center of that group. Windage is the left-right adjustment; elevationis up-down. Follow the direction markings on your scope’s turrets or adjustment dials — make a correction, then shoot another group of three to confirm the point of impact moved the way you expected. Repeat until the top reticle is dead-on at 20 yards. Change only one axis at a time when you can, so you always know which adjustment did what. Once the top mark is centered at 20, your zero is set and the rest is confirmation.

Step 4: Work out to 30, 40, and 50 yards

With the 20-yard zero locked, step back in increments — 30, then 40, then 50 yards — and shoot a group at each distance. Confirm the point of impact at each range before moving farther out; do not skip straight to the longest distance. As you move back you will see the arrow drop, which is exactly why crossbow scopes carry multiple reticles. Keep your groups tight and honest: if they open up at a given distance, that is the practical edge of your effective range, not a challenge to push past.

Step 5: Confirm the multi-reticle marks

A multi-reticle scope stacks several aiming lines, each intended for a set distance once the top one is zeroed. Check that each mark actually lines up with its distance: the second reticle at 30, the next at 40, and so on. If the lower marks do not match, most crossbow scopes have a speed or ranging settingthat aligns the stacked reticles to your arrow’s actual speed — consult your scope’s manual and adjust it, then re-confirm. The point is that every mark you might use on a deer is one you have already verified on paper, not one you are trusting blind.

Step 6: Check your broadheads against your field points

This step is non-negotiable for hunting. Field points and broadheads can fly slightly differently, so once your field points are dialed, shoot the exact broadheads you will hunt with. Ideally they hit the same point of impact as your field points; if they drift, make small scope adjustments or tune the crossbow until broadheads and field points group together. A crossbow zeroed only with field points can be off by enough to matter when a real broadhead is on the arrow. This is also where kinetic energy earns its keep — the arrow needs to carry enough energy on target to drive that broadhead through, and energy comes from arrow weight and speed, which is another reason to hunt with the same arrows you tuned.

Step 7: Verify from your hunting position

A zero confirmed off a solid bench can shift when you shoot for real. Finish by taking a few shots from the position you will actually hunt from— seated in a ground blind, or from an elevated stand with the downward angle you will really have. Angle, body position, and a less-than-perfect rest can all nudge your point of impact, and you want to discover that on the range, not on a deer. If the shift is meaningful, note it or make a small correction so your effective zero matches how you hunt.

Range, energy, and staying honest

Sight in and practice out to your maximum ethical range, and no farther. Traditionally about 50 yards is treated as the outer limit on whitetail, and plenty of hunters keep shots to 40 or less, because an arrow’s energy falls off the farther it travels and a clean, ethical kill depends on carrying enough energy to the target. Kinetic energy is a product of arrow weight and speed, and even modest deer crossbows make far more than the commonly cited minimum needed to take a whitetail — so the limiting factor is almost always your accuracy, not your crossbow’s power. Let your groups define your range: the distance at which you can keep every arrow tight is your maximum, whatever the reticle offers.

Cock it the same way every time

Consistency at the shot starts with consistency in the cock. How you draw the string affects where the arrow goes, so the way you cock the crossbow should be identical for sighting in and for hunting:

  • Use the same cocking method throughout.A rope aid or a built-in crank helps you draw the string evenly and centered on the rail. If you sight in with a crank, hunt with the crank — switching methods can shift your point of impact.
  • Center the string. An off-center draw sends arrows off to one side. Many hunters mark the string so they can confirm it seats evenly each time.
  • Have a de-cocking plan before you cock.Most crossbows should be discharged into a target or de-cocked with a dedicated method rather than left cocked for long periods. Never try to hand-release the string, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly — this is where crossbow injuries happen.

Treat the cocking routine as part of your accuracy, not a chore to rush. A crossbow that is drawn the same way every time is a crossbow that shoots the same way every time.

Troubleshooting common problems

If the process is not going smoothly, the cause is usually one of a handful of things. Work through them before you start blaming the crossbow:

  • Groups will not tighten. First rule out yourself: a solid rest, the same hold, and a clean trigger press eliminate most scatter. Then check that every arrow is the same weight and length, the points are seated and undamaged, and the rail is properly lubricated per the manual. Inconsistent arrows produce inconsistent groups no matter how well you shoot.
  • Broadheads hit away from field points. A small, consistent offset can be dialed out with the scope; a large or erratic one usually means the broadheads are not spinning true or the crossbow needs tuning. Spin-test each broadhead-and-arrow combination and replace any that wobble before you chase it with scope adjustments.
  • The lower reticles do not line up.This is almost always the scope’s speed or ranging setting not matching your arrow’s actual speed. Re-read the scope manual and set it to your setup, then re-confirm each mark on paper rather than trusting the printed distance.
  • Point of impact wanders between sessions. Check that the scope rings and base screws are snug, that the string and cables have not taken a set, and that you are not mixing arrow types. A loose mount is a classic cause of a zero that will not stay put.

Change one variable at a time when you troubleshoot. If you adjust the rest, the arrows, and the scope all at once, you will never know which one fixed — or caused — the problem.

Keep it dialed all season

A crossbow can drift out of zero from travel, bumps, a string that has taken a set, or a change in arrows. Re-check your 20-yard zero and your broadhead impact periodically through the season, especially after any hard knock or a long trip. A five-minute confirmation before a hunt is cheap insurance that the reticle you trust is still telling the truth.
