How to Choose a Compound Bow

The specs that actually matter for a deer-hunting bow — starting with the fit numbers most buyers ignore — and the ones the marketing leads with that matter least.

A compound bow’s spec sheet is built to sell you on the two numbers that matter least to a new deer hunter — arrow speed and, sometimes, price — while burying the fit measurements that decide whether you’ll actually shoot the thing well. This guide flips that order. Work through the specs below in the order of importance and you’ll buy a bow that fits you, which is the only bow that kills deer.

1. Draw length — the fit spec that matters most

Draw length is how far you pull the string to your anchor point, and it’s dictated by your body, not your preference. Get it wrong and nothing else can save your accuracy: too long and you overextend, lose a solid anchor, and let the string slap your arm; too short and you feel cramped and lose power. A rough estimate is your arm span (fingertip to fingertip) divided by 2.5, but the reliable move is to be measured at full draw by a shop. Because it matters so much and beginners so often guess wrong, we favor bows with a wide adjustable draw-length range— they give you room to dial in the fit yourself.

2. Draw weight — enough, not maximum

Draw weight is the peak force you pull, and for deer you need far less than the marketing implies. Most states set a legal minimum around 40 pounds, and a modern compound in the 45–60 pound range produces plenty of kinetic energy for a clean whitetail kill. 3. Brace height — forgiveness vs speed

Brace height is the gap between the string and the grip at rest. A taller brace (around 7 inches) releases the arrow sooner and forgives small form errors — ideal for a beginner or anyone who prioritizes a consistent shot. A shorterbrace stores more energy for a faster arrow but punishes imperfect form. For deer hunting, where the shots are close and a clean, repeatable release beats raw velocity, lean toward the more forgiving taller brace unless you’re an experienced shooter chasing speed.

4. Axle-to-axle length — maneuverability vs steadiness

Axle-to-axle (ATA) is the bow’s length between the cams. A shorterbow (roughly 30–32 inches) is easier to swing around inside a tree stand or ground blind and lighter to carry — a real advantage for the way most people hunt whitetails. A longer bow is steadier to hold on target and a touch more forgiving. For stand-and-blind deer hunting, a compact-to-mid ATA is the practical sweet spot.

5. Let-off — how much weight you hold at full draw

Compound bows use cams to reduce the weight you hold once you reach full draw — the “let-off,” usually 75–90%. Higher let-off means you hold less weight while you wait for a deer to step clear or turn broadside, which is genuinely useful on a long stand sit. Most modern hunting bows offer plenty of let-off; it’s a comfort feature worth having but rarely a deciding factor between two good bows.

6. Package value — what comes with it

A bare bow needs a sight, arrow rest, quiver, stabilizer, release aid, and arrows before you can hunt — easily hundreds of dollars on top. A ready-to-hunt package bundles the essentials, tuned close from the factory, so your money goes toward hunting rather than a parts list. The included accessories are functional rather than premium and you may upgrade the sight or arrows down the road, but for a first bow, a complete package is almost always the smarter buy than a bare flagship you then have to outfit.

7. What matters least: arrow speed

The headline IBO speed rating — measured under standardized lab conditions you’ll never replicate — is the number the marketing leads with and the one that matters least for deer. Whitetails are shot close, where the difference between 305 and 340 fps is invisible. A faster arrow shoots slightly flatter, forgiving small range-estimation errors, but no amount of speed fixes bad fit or bad form. Treat speed as a tiebreaker between two bows that already fit you and fall within your budget — never as the headline reason to buy.
