Wheel diameter is the whole argument
If you read one number before you buy, read the wheel size. It is simple geometry: a wheel rolls over an obstacle by pivoting on the point where it touches, and the taller the wheel, the shallower the angle it has to climb. A 16-inch wheel treats a three-inch root as a bump. An eight-inch wheel treats the same root as a step, and you feel every one of them in your shoulders for the next quarter mile.
This is why a garden cart, a folding wagon or a kid’s wheelbarrow — all of which will happily carry 130 lb on a driveway — are miserable in the woods and a purpose-built game cart is not. It is not that the game cart is stronger. It is that the wheels are bigger.
Tire type matters less than diameter, but it matters. Solid rubber cannot puncture, cannot go flat sitting in a truck bed all summer, and needs nothing from you — which is why every cart on this page uses it. The cost is that solid rubber does not absorb anything. Pneumatic tires ride better over rocky ground and are worth seeking out if your walk is genuinely rough, but they are one thorn away from being useless in the dark.
Capacity is mostly marketing
The National Deer Association, citing Ohio DNR data, reports average field-dressed weights of 129.69 lb for bucks and 92.27 lb for antlerless deer, and a boneless venison yield near 48% of that. Even an unusually heavy northern buck taken whole is not close to the 300 lb rating on the lightest cart here.
So what is the number for? Two honest things. First, it is a proxy for how rigid the frame is — a cart rated 750 lb is built to be pulled by a machine, and that build quality shows up as less flex when you lever it over a log. Second, it is headroom for everything else you will put on it, because a game cart quietly becomes the tool you use to move a ladder stand, a bag of corn, a pop-up blind or a load of firewood the other eleven months of the year. That secondary use is where a higher rating earns its keep, not the deer.
What capacity will never tell you is how the cart behaves loaded. That comes from where the platform sits relative to the axle. A cart with the load centered directly over the wheels balances so you are steering rather than lifting; a cart with the load forward of the axle puts a share of the deer into your arms with every step.
Two wheels, one wheel, or four
Almost every game cart sold is a two-wheel design with a single axle and long handles, and for whitetail woods that is correct. It pivots in place, it straddles a downed log, and it tracks in a single rut. The trade is that a two-wheel cart is a lever: the wheels carry most of the deer and you carry the balance through the handles.
Single-wheel carts — essentially a game barrow — are narrower still and can follow a deer trail a two-wheeler cannot. They also demand constant balance from the person pushing, which stops being charming about ten minutes into a load.
Four-wheel carts look like the obvious upgrade and usually are not. Four wheels carry the whole load so nothing rests on your arms, which is genuinely better — on a flat two-track. In timber, four contact points means the cart has to find four places to roll at once, it will not straddle anything, and it turns like a shopping cart. Buy four wheels if your haul is a field edge or a logging road. Buy two if it is woods.
Getting the deer onto the cart by yourself
This is the part the product photos skip, and it is where most first carts get a bad review. A field-dressed whitetail is a limp 130 lb with no handles, and lifting it onto a waist-high platform in one motion is not realistic alone.
The method that works is to never lift the whole animal. Tip the cart onto its side next to the deer, roll the deer against the platform, then lever the cart upright with the deer on it — the frame does the lifting and you are just rotating it. If the cart will not tip that way, the alternative is to load the front half first, resting the shoulders and head on the platform, then walk around and lift the hindquarters up after. Two half-lifts, never one whole one.
Then strap it. Every cart worth owning either includes lashing straps or has a frame you can run ratchet straps around, and a deer that shifts on a sidehill will take the cart over with it. Two straps: one across the chest, one across the hips.
The cart is not the only clock running
A cart makes the walk out faster, and faster is not just about your back. The reason to hurry is temperature. A whole carcass holds heat in its center for hours, and the NDA’s processing guidance is blunt about the priority: get the meat cooling, get it above the ice rather than sitting in melt water, and drain the cooler.
If it is warm — and early-season whitetail hunting frequently is — the right answer is often not to haul the deer whole at all. Breaking it down where it lies turns one large hot mass into four small ones with air moving around each, which cools far faster than any cart ride. Handling matters as much as speed. CDC guidance for chronic wasting disease is to wear gloves while field-dressing, bone out the meat, minimize handling of brain and spinal tissue, and have the animal tested before eating it in a CWD area. Several states also restrict transporting an intact carcass or spinal column across county or state lines, which is a rule a cart full of whole deer can quietly break. When not to buy a cart
A cart needs somewhere to roll. There are four situations where it is the wrong tool and a harness, a sled or your back is the right one:
Snow. Wheels sink and plow; a smooth surface glides. In real snow a plastic sled or even a tarp will outrun any cart on this page, and the deer stays cleaner.
Thick cover. Greenbrier, honeysuckle and cut-over do not care how big your wheels are. If you cannot walk through it standing upright, you cannot push a 48-inch-wide cart through it either.
Steep ground. A loaded cart on a sidehill wants to roll downhill with 130 lb of momentum behind it, and stopping it is how people get hurt. Downhill is where a harness lets you keep the load behind you and under control.
Short drags. If the truck is 150 yards away across a mowed field, you are going to spend longer assembling the cart than dragging the deer. A harness lives in the pack and costs about a tenth as much.
That is the case for the Allen harness above being on a list of carts. Most hunters who buy a cart should own a harness as well, and a meaningful number should own only the harness.
Buying it right, and the mistakes that show up in the dark
Assemble it in the driveway, in daylight, before the season. Every cart here ships flat and every one has at least one bolt that will fight you. Find that out in October, not at 9 p.m. in November with a deer cooling on the ground.
Load-test it before you trust it. Put 150 lb of something on it and push it across your yard. You will learn where the balance point is and whether the handles are the right height for you, which no listing will tell you.
Wear orange, and put orange on the deer. A deer being moved low through cover on public land during a firearms season is precisely the shape a careless hunter is looking for. This is not a small thing.
Carry a light that outlasts the haul. Drags happen after dark far more often than before it, and a cart on a trail at night needs a wide beam rather than a bright spot. Do not buy the cart to fix the access problem. If every deer you shoot ends up somewhere miserable, the cart is treating a symptom. Where you park and where you hang the stand are the real variables, and a cart bought instead of solving those will spend most of its life in the garage.
