Fixed pins vs a single pin
This is the real decision and everything else is detail.
Fixed multi-pin
Several pins, each set to a distance, nothing to adjust. The advantage is that a deer can appear anywhere and you already have a mark for it — you pick a pin and shoot. The disadvantage is clutter: at twenty yards, four pins below your aiming point sit right where the deer’s body is.
For whitetail this is the default, and the sensible refinement is fewer pins rather than more. If your honest maximum is thirty-five yards, three pins at twenty, thirty and forty covers everything with far less obstruction than five.
Single-pin slider
One pin on a dial you set to the exact distance. The sight picture is as clean as it gets, and you are aiming at the true yardage rather than holding between two pins.
The failure mode is specific and it happens: you dial for thirty, the deer walks to twenty while you are at full draw, and now your only pin is wrong. The standard field method is to preset the dial to your most likely distance every time you sit down, so that if the deer shows up where you expect you never touch it. That works well from a stand over a known trail and less well anywhere unpredictable.
The pendulum sight, which is a whitetail-specific tool
A pendulum sight is built for one situation and this site is about that situation. The sight housing swings on a pivot, so as you angle the bow downward from a stand the pin moves to compensate for the shorter horizontal distance the arrow actually travels.
That is the same problem an angle-compensating rangefinder solves, solved mechanically with no batteries, no dial and no arithmetic. Within its designed range band you aim at the deer and the geometry is handled. Beyond it, you lock the pendulum and it becomes an ordinary fixed pin.
The limitation is that it is a specialist. It is excellent from an elevated stand and it is not what you want if half your hunting happens from a ground blind. If you hunt almost exclusively from a tree at close range, it is arguably the best-fitted sight on this page.
Pin diameter, and why smaller is not always better
Fibre-optic pins come in sizes, most commonly .019″ and .010″. The trade-off is precision against brightness.
- .019″ gathers more light and glows brighter at dusk. It also covers more of the target at distance. For hunting whitetails in timber at last light, this is generally the right choice.
- .010″ covers less of the animal and is more precise at longer range. It is also dimmer when the light goes, which is when whitetails move.
Most whitetails are shot in the last thirty minutes of legal light. Buy for that.
Lit pins and the brightness trap
A rheostat — a dial that varies pin brightness — is worth more than an on/off light. Pins that are too bright at dusk bloom into a glow that hides the animal behind them, which is the opposite of helpful. Being able to dial them down to just visible is what makes a lit sight useful rather than a liability.
Check your regulations. Lit pins are legal in most places and prohibited in a few, and it is the kind of rule that is easy to fall foul of without knowing.
Second-axis levelling matters from a tree
A sight bubble tells you whether the bow is canted. Canting a bow throws arrows left or right, and the effect grows with distance. Second-axis adjustment is what makes the bubble read true when the sight is mounted on your particular bow.
This matters more from a stand than on flat ground, because you are shooting at a downward angle and often twisting to a side. If a sight offers second-axis adjustment, set it properly — and then actually look at the bubble on the shot. Most hunters never do.
Sight in properly, or the sight is decoration
The most common accuracy failure in bowhunting is not a bad sight. It is a sight where the twenty-yard pin was carefully set and the thirty, forty and fifty pins were eyeballed and never verified.
Auto-positioning systems address this by deriving the lower pins from two you set correctly, which is a genuine convenience. It does not remove the obligation to verify: shoot at least the pin you expect to use, from something like the position you expect to use it in. Shooting from an elevated platform at a downward angle is different from shooting off flat ground, and if you only ever practise the latter you are not practising your shot.
